The 7th year of High Stakes Poker will be demonstrated on GSN beginning this month, but unfortunately there have been some changes and very few of them are excellent. The show will have a new host as Gabe Kaplan who was on the first six seasons is gone. He is being supplanted by former Saturday Night Live cast member Norm MacDonald. Kara Scott will still be on the show as a co-host.
Adjustments
GSN is making some other changes to the show also and they do not seem positive either. The show will now contain a blend of professionals and amateur competitors. High Stakes Poker will still have some top competitors like Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan but none of the members of Full Tilt will be on the show. That means many of the top poker competitors on earth is not going to be on the show this year including Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Eli Elezra and Gus Hansen. The show will still have Daniel Negreanu, Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak but the loss of top competitors will definitely be apparent. It looks like High Stakes Poker will be sponsored by PokerStars and they did not want competitors wearing Full Tilt attire.
Bellagio
The 7th year of High Stakes Poker was filmed at the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas. The three-hour episodes will be demonstrated on GSN beginning this month. It is possible to even watch the broadcasts in 3D if you have DirecTV despite the fact that I have not a clue the reasons you would want to watch poker in 3D.
Downhill
High Stakes Poker is not going to be the same. Gabe Kaplan was an great host and was highly regarded in the poker community. He was better in mixture with A.J. Benza but he was still excellent. Norm MacDonald is a comedian who is not a poker expert. Kara Scott was excellent in her function but she is not an analyst. The days of getting insightful poker commentary look to be over and that is too bad. Gabe is a pretty excellent poker player and understood the high stakes competition. He’ll be missed. Now it is possible to only hit the mute button due to the fact you are not going to hear anything insightful from MacDonald. The other issue for High Stakes Poker is the loss of every one of the Full Tilt competitors. Dwan made the show worth observing all by himself. He’ll be missed as will other top Full Tilt pros.
