The New York Red Bulls made news once more at the sports books when they brought in Mexico’s national squad captain Rafael Marquez.

When they signed France star Thierry Henry, New York got attention earlier this season. New York may perhaps be a winning squad vs sports book soccer odds and will be a enjoyable squad to watch.

The New York Red Bulls is a founding member of Major League Soccer, but has been through several name changes since the league’s beginnings in 1996. They have adopted the name “Red Bulls” after the squad was sold to Red Bull GmbH. This season brings them a new stadium, a new head coach, and a new group of participants. They are expecting to dramatically improve on their disappointing 2009 season. Fresh head coach Hans Backe cleared out the previous coach’s players that he held responsible for the 2009 season. He is also concentrating on signing more European participants, instead of the South American participants that are usually sought after in the MLS.

Since the Red Bulls are last in the Eastern Conference of the MLS, sports books odds have not favored New York that much this season. They just have not achieved a lot with the squad as it stands. They could get some action and be favored more frequently with the addition of Marquez. New York now has three Designated Players in Henry, Marquez and Juan Pablo Angel.

New York will be helped on and off the field when you bet on games by the addition of Marquez. He appeared for Mexico in 94 games and has been their captain since 2002. He performed with Barcelona in recent seasons and was on their tournament squads in 2005, 2006, 2009 and in 2010.

New York has a total of 5 wins and only 21 points this season. Since New York is not part of the playoff race, the addition of Marquez is more focused on next season and attracting enthusiasts than it is for this season. Marquez will almost certainly play midfield for the Red Bulls. Even at his age he is almost certainly better than what New York had in the midfield, although he is not a substantial scoring threat. At least with the additions of Henry and Marquez they will be worth watching, although New York hasn’t played well for the most part this season. They might even pick up a few more wins along the way.

There is no question that with the addition of participants like Henry and Marquez, the MLS is gaining some attention at the sports book. Henry and Marquez really didn’t have a place in leading European leagues, though, and that really should not overlooked. Barcelona released Marquez just a few days ago and they didn’t use Henry much last season. The MLS just does not have as much talent as leagues like the Premier or La Liga and players who have big reputations but lowering abilities can still be effective in what is a lower level of soccer in the MLS.
